Six goals and eight assists in thirty-six La Liga matches. That`s an excellent haul for Alex Berenguer, Athletic Club`s attacking midfielder, who has truly flourished after his years at Torino. Over three years with the *Granata*, he never quite gave the impression he could be a difference-maker, but with the Bilbao club, he has become an almost indispensable player.
His value at Athletic is amplified by his versatility. He`s capable of playing multiple positions, primarily in advanced midfield roles: right or left winger, attacking midfielder, and even occasionally as a forward when needed, albeit with a different profile than a classic centre-forward.
In January, Berenguer faced a serious scare. Three armed and hooded men attempted a robbery at his home in Mungia. Berenguer managed to quickly close the glass door, successfully preventing the attackers – who had pointed a gun at him and his wife – from entering the house. The incident occurred on a late Monday afternoon. Fortunately, neither Alex Berenguer nor his wife Sofía Jem sustained any physical injuries.
Reflecting on his performance, Berenguer indicated his most recent season felt like his best. “Yes, statistically speaking, yes,” he said in previous months. “I am going through my best moment, as a player and as a person, and I believe that is showing.” Today, Alex Berenguer celebrates his 30th birthday.
