Atalanta`s Tactical Variety: Juric Has Utilized Nearly Every Player Available This Season

`Lazar

In a hypothetical recruitment scenario, Atalanta has already “interviewed” all 22 of its candidates. After just 8 official matches (6 in the league and 2 in the Champions League), Ivan Juric has deployed 22 players. Excluding reserve goalkeepers Marco Sportiello and Francesco Rossi, and the long-term injured Sead Kolasinac and Mitchel Bakker, who have been unavailable since the start of the season, every other player has had game time.

Room for Everyone

Juric`s planned rotations have been further intensified by a series of injuries that have affected the squad. Given that “La Dea” has lost only one match – against reigning European champions PSG in Paris – it can be said that this widespread utilization has been highly successful for all involved. In sporting terms, this means Juric can genuinely rely on a deep squad. Lorenzo Bernasconi, who had a quiet start to the season, has also emerged, being promoted from the Under 23 team and suddenly becoming a positive protagonist in the first team. The diversity of players at the Croatian coach`s disposal now allows for a broad tactical foundation. The minutes played have accelerated the assimilation of tactical principles: with the league resuming and Kolasinac`s return, the team essentially has a “double squad” at its disposal. Marco Carnesecchi has been the only ever-present player. Mario Pasalic and Berat Djimsiti have been granted some rest, but like the goalkeeper, they have made 8 appearances out of 8. Marten de Roon missed the match against Como due to suspension and the remaining minutes after his red card against Juventus. Marco Brescianini has played the fewest minutes so far (86`, not including added time), but has proven useful in at least two positions between midfield and attacking midfield.

Double Choice

After the international break, Atalanta faces 7 matches in 21 days (5 in the league and 2 in the Champions League). With such a packed schedule, Juric will be able to make varied choices based on his tactics, opponents, and player fitness. The fact that minutes and goals have been distributed among multiple players (8 of the 21 outfield players used have scored) will be an extremely valuable asset.
