Protti, who is bravely fighting a serious illness, participated via video call, expressing heartfelt gratitude: `Thank you for the chants and for the wonderful tribute you have created.`
On the evening of April 10, 1996, a momentous event unfolded on Atalanta`s pitch: Igor Protti scored a magnificent bicycle kick goal. This acrobatic feat, part of a brace, dramatically overturned Bobo Vieri`s penalty and was achieved despite Bari playing with ten men from the end of the first half. It provided a significant boost to Protti`s pursuit of the top scorer title that season. While an exhilarating victory, it proved illusory for Fascetti`s Bari, as they were relegated to Serie B at the season`s end. Yet, the indelible image of that extraordinary acrobatic goal, forever etched in the minds and hearts of Biancorossi fans, has now found a permanent home. It`s immortalized in a stunning mural, championed by the Retake Bari association and crafted by artist Silvio Paradiso. This site has swiftly transformed into a place of pilgrimage for supporters. The mural was officially unveiled on the afternoon of October 8th in the Poggiofranco district, with the former striker participating remotely via video call. Deeply moved, `The Tsar`—who has been courageously battling a severe illness for months—expressed his profound gratitude: `Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the chants and for this magnificent tribute you have created.`
A Flood of Affection and Surprises
This mural stands as another powerful testament to Bari`s unwavering support for Protti during his challenging health battle. Just days prior, for his 58th birthday, long-time friend Alfonso Cacciapuoti orchestrated a heartwarming surprise visit, gathering many of Protti`s former teammates from the mid-nineties Bari squad—the team that had once captivated the city. The bond between Protti and the Apulian capital has always been exceptionally strong. At the close of the 1995/96 season, fans vehemently attempted to prevent his transfer to Lazio, plastering roadside billboards with the declaration `Igor, Bari loves you.` Although the beloved striker`s departure eventually materialized, the deep affection for one of the Biancorossi`s most iconic figures has never diminished.
