Two years after escaping the conflict, the young talent makes a stunning Serie B debut for Empoli, scoring two goals and beginning a new chapter in his extraordinary journey.
Gazing into Bogdan Popov`s eyes, one is met with a cold, profound, almost fearful stare. He appears small, despite his impressive height of one meter ninety-three. He has witnessed the horrors of war in Ukraine, images that cling to one`s soul like tattoos. They are a constant presence in his thoughts, even from afar. Today was likely no different, as he stepped onto the Castellani pitch in Empoli and, with two decisive strikes, brought down Andreoletti`s Padova. Not a bad way to make a debut for a player born in 2007.
The Journey
Over time, Popov has learned to endure life`s harsh winds, skillfully navigating its challenges and discovering the surprising twists it holds, for better or worse. Two years ago, he made the courageous decision to escape the war, leaving Ukraine behind in search of safety from bombs and devastation. He found sanctuary in Italy, specifically in a family home in the province of Massa. Football became his crucial tool for integration, a universal language that breaks down linguistic and cultural barriers. And Bogdan, it turned out, was exceptionally gifted at the game. So much so that a scout took notice and presented him to Empoli. At Monteboro, just two trials were enough to captivate everyone and secure him a place in the team.
Together Again
Empoli`s president, Fabrizio Corsi, played a pivotal role in Popov`s development. He nurtured him, provided support when needed, and offered both stern words and encouragement. Corsi then worked tirelessly to fulfill Popov`s greatest dream: reuniting with his mother and brothers. Thanks in part to Empoli`s efforts, they were able to come to Italy and be together again. Those heartfelt smiles, for Bogdan, were worth more than a hundred goals.
The Debut
Last year was a period of significant achievement for Popov. At 17, he dominated in the Primavera youth league, scoring 10 goals and clearly demonstrating the quality required to make the leap to senior football. Coach Pagliuca included him in the first-team training camp and gave him his starting debut in the Coppa Italia. Then, tonight, following Shpendi`s injury, he was called upon to enter the match against Padova. It took him just 12 minutes to make an impact and find his first joy in Serie B – a predatory finish after a goalmouth scramble, showcasing true striker`s instinct. And in the second half, he repeated the feat, completing a brace in just 65 minutes on the pitch. Empoli`s hope is that these are the first of many goals to come. Meanwhile, he keeps his head down, works diligently, and strives to improve day after day. Without fear. The war taught him that resilience.
