Fabio Borini has shared an emotional message on social media reflecting on the end of his two-year spell with Sampdoria. Writing the letter on a flight back to Manchester, he aimed to speak from the heart about his emotions and the connection he felt, describing it with the sensitivity he associates with the club. His time at Sampdoria recently involved being excluded from the squad for several months before being reintegrated towards the end of the season.
He recalled how the connection began with enthusiasm, focused solely on achieving promotion to Serie A, a goal they ultimately did not reach. Borini described feeling a strong sense of unity with the club and its supporters, feeling like a true extension of the “blucerchiato” people. He experienced profound emotions that made him feel the shirt was the very skin and blood of everyone involved.
Addressing the fans directly, Borini spoke of feeling genuine connections with supporters who prioritize Sampdoria above everything else, but noted that such individuals have become increasingly rare internally. He then referred to negative influences he termed “apostles of ruin” who, he claims, damaged and corrupted the love for the club, turning it into a sadly one-sided affair. Borini revealed that being excluded from the squad sent him into a dark place where he grappled with depression, anger, frustration, and desperation to regain the connection he once shared with Sampdoria.
He characterized his decision to remain close to the club as courageous, perhaps even self-destructive. In his darkest hours, he was there, fighting his battle in solitude, yet was content to give the fans his true self.
Looking towards the future, Borini expressed his sincere desire that Sampdoria will once again be populated by individuals who genuinely place the club before their own personal interests. He believes Sampdoria deserves its devoted supporters and his sincere reflections. For him, Sampdoria is not merely the most beautiful shirt in the world but, based on his two years there, a genuine wonder of the world.
