Last season`s top assist provider in Serie B, Jari Vandeputte, is experiencing an incredible return to Serie A. After the first six matchdays, his team, Cremonese, remarkably sits in eighth place, level on points with Sassuolo and Como. The Grigiorossi midfielder spoke at a press conference following today`s training session to discuss their start in Italy`s top flight.
Vandeputte stated: “It`s definitely been positive, especially in terms of results. With the exception of our last match against Inter – where we faced a very strong team that everyone is familiar with – we`ve performed well. We must continue on this path.”
Adapting to the Top Flight
When asked about his personal debut in Serie A and how it`s progressing, Vandeputte replied:
“I`m feeling good. I`m still going through an adaptation period because the level is very high, but I`ve seen that I can contribute, and I`m pleased about that. I will continue to give my absolute best for the team.”
Asked if his responsibilities have changed now playing as a mezzala (central midfielder) in the top division, Vandeputte explained:
“Our opponents are on an entirely different level, so it`s crucial to maintain a high level of concentration. This is the only way to avoid mistakes that are immediately punished in Serie A. For this reason, it`s essential to give your maximum effort in every single game.”
New Objectives for Cremonese
Discussing Cremonese`s change in playing style since their promotion to Serie A, Vandeputte observed:
“The style of play is different, and so is our objective. Last year, we were aiming for the top spots; this year, our goal is simply survival. To achieve this as quickly as possible, our approach to matches has shifted. However, what remains fundamental is fighting tirelessly to earn valuable points. I feel comfortable within this new system. It demands more defensive sacrifices, but without that commitment, you won`t succeed at this level. We will continue this approach to secure important points.”
