Borussia Dortmund is preparing to face Juventus in their Champions League opener, an anticipated rematch just a month after the German side experienced a 2-1 defeat in a pre-season friendly. Dortmund`s head coach, Nico Kovac, acknowledged the previous loss but expects a significantly different challenge from Juventus in this competitive fixture.

As the Champions League group stage gets underway, Niko Kovac shared his pre-match thoughts on the formidable Italian opponents. Reflecting on the 2-1 pre-season loss to the Bianconeri, Kovac pointed out the changes and inherent advantages Juventus will possess. “The Bianconeri have strengthened their squad with new additions, including some familiar faces from the Bundesliga like Openda,” Kovac observed. “Crucially, Juventus will enjoy the home advantage, fueled by the passion of 40,000 fans. We must be resilient and resist the immense stadium pressure. The Champions League holds a special significance for us; our goal is to start strongly and progress as far as possible in the tournament.”

Kovac also expressed high regard for his fellow Croatian, Igor Tudor, who now manages Juventus. “I am not at all surprised to see Igor leading Serie A with Juventus,” he affirmed. “He is a coach who has consistently performed well everywhere he`s been, including his time in France with Marseille. It will be a pleasure to see Igor again, but come match day, we will need to give one hundred percent in our pursuit of victory. We have extensively reviewed footage of Juventus, and even during our August friendly, they demonstrated their enormous potential.”

When questioned about his team`s tactical approach, Kovac maintained a degree of discretion: “We possess tactical flexibility on the wings; we will determine if we maintain our strategy from Saturday`s game or opt for adjustments. Healthy competition within the squad is vital, as it ultimately elevates our performance.”

Sabitzer Outlines Dortmund`s Lofty Champions League Aspirations

Midfielder Marcel Sabitzer, speaking alongside Coach Kovac, reiterated Borussia Dortmund`s ambitious goals for the prestigious European tournament. “The Champions League is a fiercely contested competition, and like every other participating team, our ambition is to win it,” the Austrian midfielder stated emphatically. “Two years ago, we reached the final; last year, our journey ended earlier, and this season we are determined to make another deep run.” Sabitzer also touched upon potential tactical configurations: “We have the option to play with two defensive midfielders; it`s a viable solution.” When asked about teammate Jobe Bellingham, he added: “He`s an excellent young talent; I enjoy working with him, and he clearly has significant potential. We are delighted to have him as part of our squad.”
