Preview Gama on Italy Women’s Team: “The Azzurre Can Go Beyond the Group Stage. But Nothing is Given”

Former player and Rai commentator Sara Gama spoke exclusively to La Gazzetta dello Sport about the Italy Women`s National Team competing at Euro 2025. She commented: “In these initial matches, I`ve seen a team that hasn`t yet performed at its best, which is also the players` view, but in any case, they started well. The overall assessment is very positive.”

A decisive match is approaching, as tomorrow`s game against Spain is crucial for qualifying for the quarterfinals, a stage Italy hasn`t reached in 12 years. Gama offered advice: “As I said, we can play better, but now is not the time to dwell on that. Against the world champions, you shouldn`t think about playing your absolute best football. You just need to be focused on the moment, remain aggressive – and by aggression, I mean clarity in ball management, but also balance and calm. We are still in a good position in the standings, but you have to go out there and earn things.”

Gama concluded by referencing the 2013 tournament, when Italy reached the quarterfinals with her on the field: “My former teammates feel the weight of the moment and are eager to prove they can get beyond the group stage; this would align with consistent growth. I say it`s possible, but outside the team environment, people need to remember that nothing is guaranteed. Those 12 years are there to prove it.”
