L`AC Milan si guarda allo specchio e stenta a riconoscersi. La squadra che ha iniziato il campionato l`anno scorso sembra ormai un ricordo lontano, con un volto e uno stile completamente diversi. Negli ultimi dodici mesi, il Milan ha rivoluzionato la sua rosa, sostituendo 24 dei 35 giocatori scesi in campo. Delle 27 figure immortalate nella foto della squadra dell`estate 2024, ben 16 hanno lasciato la città, `spediti a un indirizzo nuovo`, come cantava De Gregori. Sebbene alcuni reparti siano stati più colpiti di altri, il mercato è stato un`operazione senza precedenti, quasi folle. Ad esempio, Milanello ha visto passare cinque potenziali terzini destri – Emerson Royal, Calabria, Terracciano, Walker, Jimenez – e nessuno di loro è rimasto. Sono partiti giocatori giovani e meno giovani, talentuosi e meno, e quasi tutti gli attaccanti, tra cui Chukwueze, Liberali, Joao Felix, Morata, Jovic, Abraham, Okafor, Camarda, Omoregbe e Sottil. I Blindati
Pochi giocatori hanno trascorso un anno senza temere un possibile addio. Gabbia è stato uno di questi, senza dubbio. Anche Loftus-Cheek, con una certezza del 99%: è stato rapidamente `blindato` da Allegri ancor prima che scendesse in campo. Pulisic e Pavlovic hanno avuto un minimo di apprensione: per Christian si sono diffuse voci di offerte dall`Arabia, durate tuttavia molto poco, mentre per Strahinja le discussioni non sono andate oltre qualche ipotesi di cessione invernale.
I Giovani Talenti
I giovani meritano un discorso a parte. Torriani e Bartesaghi piacciono parecchio sia in Italia che all`estero, ma il Milan ha scelto di puntare su di loro e non li ha messi in discussione. Con Liberali è andata molto diversamente, così come con Camarda, ma per ragioni ben diverse. Tornando a Torriani e Bartesaghi: il portiere ha suscitato l`interesse del Lione di Fonseca, l`allenatore che lo ha lanciato, ma l`operazione non si è concretizzata. Per il difensore, diverse squadre si sono interessate, tra cui la Roma. Anche in questo caso, Allegri si è fidato: Bartesaghi sarà la prima riserva a sinistra, di Estupinan e forse anche di Pavlovic.
Le Occasioni Mancate
Facciamo un passo avanti, verso chi è stato a un bivio. C`è stato un momento in cui il Bayern ha valutato di fare un`offerta per Rafa Leao. E c`è stato un giorno d`estate in cui Youssouf Fofana è stato al centro di voci di mercato dall`Arabia, che però non si sono mai concretizzate. Nessuna delle due ipotesi ha preso corpo e per loro la situazione è rimasta serena, grazie a quelle strane concatenazioni di eventi che indirizzano le vite. Considerando il potere d`acquisto degli acquirenti, un`offerta concreta non avrebbe lasciato il Milan indifferente. Se ne parlerà, forse, tra sei mesi, ma questa è un`altra storia.
I Grandi Rischi
Tre giocatori, più di altri, hanno rischiato seriamente di partire: ci sono stati giorni in cui erano più fuori che dentro al Milan. Il Chelsea, a inizio estate, ha messo Mike Maignan in cima alla sua lista per la porta e ha seriamente considerato di portarlo al Mondiale per club. Per una settimana, si è pensato che un accordo di circa 18 milioni si sarebbe chiuso. Allegri, appena insediatosi, ha chiesto di ripartire dal portiere-capitano e il Milan lo ha accontentato: ha tolto Maignan dal mercato, una scelta che però non ha facilitato la trattativa con lo Strasburgo – società sorella del Chelsea – per Guéla Doué. Fikayo Tomori, invece, ha rischiato grosso, grossissimo, a gennaio. Il Milan aveva trovato un accordo prima con la Juventus e poi con il Tottenham, ma Fik per due volte ha detto `no, grazie, io resterei qui`. Il suo messaggio era chiaro: o mi dite che sono di troppo, oppure rimango al Milan. Nessuno glielo ha mai detto.
A un Passo dal Baratro
Santi Gimenez è andato oltre ogni altro giocatore. Più di Maignan, è stato vicino all`addio. Più di Tomori, ha rischiato di giocare per una squadra avversaria del Milan. Gasperini ha visto in lui qualcosa di speciale e nelle ultime 48 ore di mercato lo scambio con Dovbyk ha animato siti e discussioni sui social. Santi è rimasto e, proprio come quando corre verso la porta, non deve guardarsi indietro. I milanisti volevano che restasse, e lui simpatizza per il Milan fin da bambino: ha un`altra occasione, cosa volere di più?

Two astonishing transfer windows have left the Rossoneri squad with only 11 players. Some of them even narrowly avoided leaving the club. Here are their stories.

AC Milan looks in the mirror and barely recognizes itself. The team that started last year`s championship now seems a distant memory, with a completely different face and style. In the last twelve months, Milan has revolutionized its squad, replacing 24 of the 35 players who took to the field. Of the 27 figures immortalized in the 2024 summer team photo, a remarkable 16 have left the city, `sent to a new address,` as De Gregori sang. While some departments were more affected than others, the transfer market was an unprecedented, almost frantic operation. For instance, Milanello saw five potential right-backs – Emerson Royal, Calabria, Terracciano, Walker, Jimenez – pass through, and none of them remained. Young and old players (or rather, less young), strong and less strong, and almost all the attackers – including Chukwueze, Liberali, Joao Felix, Morata, Jovic, Abraham, Okafor, Camarda, Omoregbe, and Sottil – have departed. The Undisputed Stalwarts
Few players enjoyed a peaceful year without the threat of departure. Gabbia was certainly one of them. Loftus-Cheek was also 99% safe, quickly `locked down` by Allegri even before he played. Pulisic and Pavlovic experienced a slight tremor: for Christian, there were rumors of offers from Saudi Arabia, though they lasted only a short while, while for Strahinja, discussions didn`t go beyond a few winter transfer hypotheses.
The Young Talents
Young players deserve a separate discussion. Torriani and Bartesaghi are highly regarded both in Italy and abroad, but Milan chose to bet on them and did not put them up for sale. With Liberali, things went very differently, as did with Camarda, but for entirely different reasons. Returning to Torriani and Bartesaghi: the goalkeeper attracted interest from Fonseca`s Lyon, the coach who launched him, but the deal did not materialize. For the defender, several teams showed interest, including Roma. Again, Allegri trusted him: Bartesaghi will be the primary backup on the left, for Estupinan and perhaps even Pavlovic.
Missed Opportunities
Let`s move on to those who stood at a crossroads. There was a moment when Bayern considered making an offer for Rafa Leao. And there was a summer day when Youssouf Fofana was at the center of transfer rumors from Saudi Arabia, which, however, never materialized. Neither hypothesis took hold, and for them, the situation remained calm, thanks to those strange concatenations of events that guide lives. Considering the purchasing power of the buyers, a concrete offer would not have left Milan indifferent. Perhaps it will be discussed in six months, but that`s another story.
The Great Risks
Three players, more than others, were at serious risk of leaving: there were days when they were more out than in at Milan. Chelsea, at the beginning of the summer, put Mike Maignan at the top of their goalkeeper shortlist and seriously considered bringing him to the Club World Cup. For a week, it was thought that a deal of around 18 million would be finalized. Allegri, immediately after taking charge, asked to rebuild starting with the captain-goalkeeper, and Milan followed his request: they took Maignan off the market, a choice that, however, did not help negotiations with Strasbourg – Chelsea`s sister club – for Guéla Doué. Fikayo Tomori, on the other hand, faced a huge, enormous risk in January. Milan had reached an agreement first with Juventus and then with Tottenham, but Fik twice said `thanks but no, thanks, I`d rather stay here.` His message was clear: either you tell me I`m superfluous, or I stay at Milan. No one ever told him he was superfluous.
On the Brink of Departure
Santi Gimenez went beyond all other players. More than Maignan, he was close to leaving. More than Tomori, he risked playing for an opposing team of Milan. Gasperini saw something special in him, and in the last 48 hours of the transfer window, the exchange with Dovbyk fueled websites and social media discussions. Santi remained, and just as when he runs towards the goal, he shouldn`t look back. Milan fans wanted him to stay, and he`s been a Milan supporter since childhood: he has another chance, what more could he want?
