The Italian women`s national team, led by coach Andrea Soncin, has commenced its training camp in Switzerland in preparation for Euro 2025. During the opening press conference, the coach expressed immense pride and emotion about this opportunity, describing it as a dream that has been building for a long time and which they now have the chance to live.
Soncin highlighted the collaborative effort with the Federation to be in this position and provide the best possible environment for the players. He stated that the team is eager to get started, stressing the need to manage emotional aspects alongside technical and tactical preparation. He also acknowledged a crucial “off-field” factor that is decisive in these circumstances.
Addressing the players not included in the squad, Soncin extended his gratitude to all those who participated in the journey, not just in the recent period leading up to the Euros. He explained that the selection process involved difficult choices, as many players deserved a call-up, but decisions were made based on a wide range of considerations, including current form, psycho-physical state, and performance with both clubs and the national team.
When asked if he would settle for a second-place finish, the coach reiterated the team`s long-held approach of not being complacent and focusing on one match at a time. He asserted that the team has proven on the field that they can compete with anyone, and therefore, they do not intend to set limits, while maintaining great respect for their opponents.
Finally, regarding the captaincy, Soncin confirmed that the selection criteria have consistently been based on experience. He stated that Cristiana Girelli, the player with the most caps, will continue to serve as the team captain, maintaining the established practice since the first training camp.
