Having come through the academies of Luton and especially Arsenal, where he truly rose to prominence and became the player fondly remembered by many, particularly in England, Jack Wilshere has decided to take a significant new step in his career. After retiring from playing in the summer of 2022 and gaining experience as an assistant coach at Norwich, the former Gunners midfielder has officially been appointed as the new head coach of Luton Town.
A Candid Conversation with Mikel Arteta
Interviewed by the club`s official channels, Wilshere revealed a candid conversation with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta:
“I spoke to Mikel and asked him: `When did you know you were ready?`… He laughed and told me: `You just have to jump in and swim as hard as you can.` Obviously, he did it very well, and I felt I was close to that moment. This situation feels somewhat similar to me. Of course, it`s a different level, but when Mikel arrived at Arsenal, it wasn`t a good moment, and the fans weren`t entirely sure what was happening.”
Ready for the Challenge at 33
Now at Luton Town, the 33-year-old Wilshere will begin his career as a head coach. He expressed his enthusiasm and readiness for the opportunity:
“I`m grateful because I feel this is exactly what I needed. It`s what every young coach needs: an opportunity, first and foremost, and then support. And I feel I`ve found both here. I believe this comes at the right time, and I feel ready.”
Wilshere takes over from Matt Bloomfield, who was sacked earlier this month after winning only 5 of his first 11 matches. Luton, after a single season in the Premier League in 2023/24, has suffered two consecutive relegations and is currently in mid-table in League One, the third tier of English football. This new role presents a significant challenge for the former England international as he embarks on his managerial journey.
