Former Roma Goalkeeper Shares Enzo`s Journey: “Jannik is His Idol, I Share Our Battle on Social Media”

Julio Sergio proudly displays his new haircut, a complete shave courtesy of his friend and barber, Claudio. A few days ago, he sat in the salon chair with his son Enzo. They held hands, looked at each other, and smiled: “We never expected such an outpouring of love. The video we posted on social media went viral worldwide. Friends, former teammates, and fans wrote to us. We are truly grateful for all the affection received. And with this new look, we truly look beautiful!” The former Roma goalkeeper is facing the most important match of his life alongside his 15-year-old son, Enzo. It`s a battle that began some time ago: “Receiving the diagnosis of his illness was a huge blow. We had no certainty about the future. During this time, we`ve experienced beautiful moments and complicated ones. But my son has never lost his smile; he`s always happy. He is the one who gives strength to our entire family. We want to win this fight together. We still have a lot to do.”
Enzo, just like his father, is a huge sports enthusiast.
“I`ve traveled the world because of football,” says Julio Sergio. “Today, the most beautiful place I want to be forever is by his side. We watch matches together, and he also loves tennis. He`s a huge fan of Cristiano Ronaldo and Sinner, and a passionate supporter of Santos.”

A wonderful meeting with Neymar has already taken place.
“We met a few months ago,” he recalls. “Enzo really wanted to meet him. Neymar gave him a jersey, but my son warned him: `Ney, you need to stay in shape, next year we`re playing the World Cup. We need you.` We hope he keeps his promise.”
So, the next person Enzo wants to meet is Jannik.
“He was one of the many athletes who recorded a video of encouragement for Enzo,” he says. “It would be wonderful to see them together, perhaps in Rome. Enzo never misses one of Sinner`s matches.”

The message has been sent. However, there are also those who have never ceased to offer their support.
“Many former teammates call me and send messages,” he shares. “People often send a thought and a prayer for Enzo, and that`s enough for us. Everyone has their daily life; we all have obstacles to overcome. My life is like this: I work, I stay close to my son, and together we face whatever happens. Every day is different. It depends on the results of appointments, tests, and how he responds to treatments.”
Has the immense affection received recently surprised you?
“Immensely. It`s not the first time I`ve published a video of Enzo and me shaving our heads,” he explains. “On social media, I share our battle. He is a true superhero; in these five years, I`ve never seen him shed a tear. This is the right way to face the illness. I hope that more and more attention can be given to people in our situation. Accessible treatments are needed, and research must continue to develop less painful therapies. Institutions, in Brazil and beyond, must also do their part.”

What is the most cherished moment you`ve shared with Enzo?
“He teaches me how to live,” he states. “I see it in his eyes, in his smile. We cherish every single second together with the rest of our family: my wife and little Gaia. Seeing Enzo happy makes us feel good.”
What could make him even happier?
“Celebrating Brazil`s victory at the next World Cup,” he replies. “Perhaps even Roma winning the Serie A title at Circus Maximus. My Giallorossi jersey is framed in my office. His is already waiting in the closet.”
