Defensive and Midfield Challenges Ahead of Torino Clash

Lazio is scheduled to resume training this afternoon at Formello, following a well-deserved rest day granted by head coach Maurizio Sarri. The immediate priority will be a thorough assessment of the club`s escalating injury list. Following their recent fixture in Genoa, the Biancocelesti have returned with two additional players sidelined, intensifying their squad selection challenges.

Defender Igor Marusic is reported to have sustained a hamstring injury, with his return to competitive action not anticipated until after the upcoming international break. Consequently, Elseid Hysaj is expected to step in and cover the right-back position for the crucial match against Torino. A change on the opposite defensive flank also appears highly probable, as Luca Pellegrini has unfortunately been sidelined due to a right knee strain. While his condition will be further evaluated in the coming hours, the prospects for a swift recovery are minimal. This situation means Nuno Tavares, who began the last game in Marassi on the bench, is now poised to reclaim his spot at left-back.

In terms of other potential returns, Manuel Lazzari, the former Spal full-back, might make a return to the bench as an alternative for the wide defensive roles. He is currently recovering from a calf injury and is expected to be included in the squad for Saturday`s match. Gustav Isaksen, despite receiving a call-up from Denmark for upcoming international commitments, will also likely start on the bench. The winger has not yet regained full match fitness after suffering from mononucleosis during the initial phase of pre-season training at Formello.

Midfield Emergency

The situation in midfield presents an equally daunting challenge. Matías Vecino`s return to action is also delayed until after the international break, a significant blow given his potential contribution during this period of crisis. The Uruguayan international has been out of contention since August 8th due to muscular problems, with his reintegration into group training being repeatedly postponed.

For the clash against Torino, Sarri will also have to contend without Mattéo Guendouzi, who is serving the second and final match of his suspension, and Nicolò Rovella, who remains sidelined with pubalgia. However, Belahyane, the former Verona player, will be available again after completing a one-match suspension and is expected to provide a much-needed alternative in midfield. The central midfield against the Granata is anticipated to feature the confirmed partnership of Toma Bašić and Danilo Cataldi.
