Despite Olympique de Marseille (OM) reportedly considering their star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to be injured, Gabon National Team coach Thierry Mouyouma insisted on selecting him as a starter for the recent Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Cameroon and Mozambique. Aubameyang justified the decision by scoring against Mozambique, though Gabon ultimately lost 2-3. This selection choice sparked serious concern within the French club, prompting the coach to issue a firm and strong response during a press conference following the defeat.

“I am outraged by the attitude of Marseille,” Mouyouma declared sharply. “They pay the player, and when they use him, they do exactly what they want. Following the improvement of the player`s physical and physiological condition, the Gabon technical staff decided to give him a chance because the nation is currently going through difficulties.”

The national coach then directed a forceful message toward European football clubs regarding international duty.

“The Africa Cup of Nations is the third most important competition in the world. This contempt for the Africa Cup must end. We do not accept orders from anyone regarding the use of players born in this country. This applies to Marseille and to all clubs that might think the same way.”
