Preview Milan’s International Break: Pulisic Back, Estupiñán and Saelemaekers Injured

AC Milan faces new injury concerns as Estupiñán suffers an ankle sprain and Saelemaekers a muscle issue, while Pulisic makes a welcome return to action.

The early stages of the international break have brought a mix of relief and concern for AC Milan, with two new injuries emerging and one scare averted. With 15 players away on national duty—the highest contingent among Serie A clubs—coach Stefano Pioli (or the relevant Milan coach at the time of the article) at Milanello is undoubtedly anxious for no further medical setbacks.

One of the latest casualties is Estupiñán, who was forced off in the 44th minute of the friendly match against Christian Pulisic`s USA team. Initial reports indicate a left ankle sprain, an injury that will rule him out of his national team`s next game in Mexico on Tuesday. The Rossoneri defender, who missed the recent league fixture against Juventus due to suspension, will now undergo further evaluation in view of the crucial Fiorentina match at San Siro on Sunday, October 19th. His participation in that game is clearly at risk.

A similar situation has arisen with Alexis Saelemaekers, who played 59 minutes in Belgium`s World Cup qualifier against North Macedonia. Belgian media sources are reporting a muscle lesion, which will prevent him from featuring in Monday`s match against Wales. The Milan winger is expected to return to Milanello promptly for a thorough assessment by the club`s medical staff.

Pulisic`s Swift Return Offers Relief

The silver lining for Milan, however, is the quick recovery of Christian Pulisic. Concerns had mounted before the Ecuador match as he had not trained, and coach Pochettino had spoken cautiously about his condition:

“He didn`t train yesterday. He suffered a minor ankle problem during preseason. After Wednesday`s training, his ankle was a bit swollen. It`s an important match, yes, but at the same time, it`s important not to take risks. He will be on the bench, and then we will decide if he can play. Otherwise, the goal is for him to be ready for the next game against Australia.”

Fortunately, there was no need to wait until Tuesday: `Captain America` made his appearance in the 73rd minute, replacing Weah, allowing Milan to breathe a sigh of relief. Despite this, his ankle will continue to be closely monitored, irrespective of his immediate availability.
