Preview Mile Svilar Renews with Roma: Five Years, €4 Million Per Season

A 5-year agreement with the Serbian number one, who confirmed his decision with an Instagram post: “Unique emotions, only our fans understand…”

While not a new signing, for many Roma fans, it feels like one. The agreement between Mile Svilar and Roma is nearing completion, with the Serbian goalkeeper set to sign his contract renewal until 2030 upon his return to the capital. Not everything is finalized yet; some minor details need sorting out. But these are just finishing touches, things that won`t cause the deal to fall through. Essentially, the fear of seeing Serie A`s best goalkeeper move elsewhere has been put to rest. Svilar will remain with the Giallorossi. If a massive offer were to arrive in the future, Roma and the player would evaluate it together. But for now, they are proceeding together, with mutual satisfaction. Indeed, last night Mile celebrated by sharing a series of photos on Instagram with a clear message: “Unique emotions, only Roma fans understand. Forza Roma.”

The Situation

Svilar will sign a contract worth approximately 4 million euros, including bonuses (the fixed part will be around 3.4 million, with the rest coming from variable components). Ultimately, he and his agent, Vlado Lemic, reached their goal, obtaining what they desired. The negotiation had become complicated, particularly when it was handled by Florent Ghisolfi, Roma`s former technical area manager, who failed to create any rapport with the player`s entourage. Ghisolfi`s initial offers (1.6 million and then 2 million plus bonuses) were considered almost offensive by some. Roma then realized that the player is too important to lose and that starting the season without last season`s best player would also be an own goal in terms of image, especially towards the fanbase, which has already shown its love this year with over 40,000 season ticket holders. Claudio Ranieri`s intervention was decisive in unblocking the negotiation; he worked psychologically with the player, bringing the parties closer. In recent days, news had also spread about a possible 6 million euro offer from Galatasaray, but the player did not consider this possibility.

The Contract Details

Initially, there was also the desire to make an even longer contract, for 8 years, taking advantage of the recent decree law that extended the maximum duration of a professional contract from 5 to 8 years. However, to use the new contractual formula and sign Svilar until 2033, the decree law would need to be converted into law within two months of its publication date (last June 30th). And there is no possibility, if applicable, to include an ad-hoc clause that automatically extends the agreement if the decree is converted into law. In short, to secure Svilar for life, one would have to wait until at least September, an option that neither Roma nor Svilar want to consider.

Training

Incidentally, Svilar has had a particular summer, not least because he became a father for the first time to little Lio-Mile. His wife`s pregnancy “forced” him to stay at his home in Antwerp, unable to dedicate himself to the classic footballer`s vacation. There, however, Mile never stopped training, as shown by the video he published yesterday on Instagram, which shows him on the field, working with cones and making saves. Just enough to arrive in shape at Trigoria and celebrate the signing of the new contract in the best way possible with Gasperini.
