Milan`s mayor, Beppe Sala, has proposed a tight schedule aiming for the sale of the area to Milan and Inter by the July 31st deadline, but many doubts remain. And the opposition protests with stadium chants…

It`s a race against time to resolve the San Siro matter by the July 31st deadline. This very tight schedule, according to Ansa, has created tensions between the Mayor of Milan, Beppe Sala, and his majority coalition. It has also provoked a strong reaction from the opposition, who even started chanting stadium songs inside the City Council chamber.

New San Siro: Sala`s Path

According to the agency report, Sala and the majority group leaders outlined this plan after a meeting lasting over two hours regarding the sale of the stadium and surrounding areas to Inter and Milan: finalize the agreement with the clubs in the coming days, bring the resolution to the executive committee on Monday, July 21st, convene a couple of commissions next week, and then proceed to the City Council for discussion. However, the meeting reportedly included tense moments, leading the mayor to leave the room. At this point, it`s not guaranteed that the issue will be resolved by July 31st; doubts are even emerging from within the majority. Our position in the chamber will remain what it has always been, explained Green group leader Tommaso Gorini, which is that this approach is not the right choice for the city. It was an exploratory meeting where various aspects of the negotiation, which is not yet concluded, were discussed, added PD group leader Beatrice Uguccioni. This is not the best time to address this action because we are in the phase of budget adjustment discussions. We will see if we can wrap everything up by the end of the month, and we will do our best to bring the documents to the council within the foreseen timelines.

The Centre-right`s Protest Against Sala

Meanwhile, centre-right city councillors protested at the start of the City Council session, continuously singing stadium chants in the chamber (Beppe Sala, come down from your office, was the text) and demanding that the mayor report on the stadium sale negotiation. A delegation later left the Council chamber and went up to the first floor of Palazzo Marino to knock on the mayor`s office door, seeking a meeting.
