Preview Serie A: Milan-Como Match Abroad Possible, New Postponement Rules Approved

Serie A is poised for a potential historical shift. The match between Milan and Como, scheduled for early February, is likely to be played abroad. This was confirmed by Lega Serie A president, Ezio Simonelli, who stated, “We have requested authorization from FIFA, UEFA, and the local federations. I believe I can say it will happen, even if it`s not yet official.” The most concrete possibility is Perth, Australia, given San Siro`s unavailability due to the Winter Olympics. This would set a significant precedent, as no European league has previously played an official match outside its national borders.

In related news, the league assembly discussed amending the statute to regulate match postponements. The new rule, set for approval on July 15th, stipulates that suspended matches should, where possible, be rescheduled within 24 hours. Simonelli clarified that the aim is to prevent anyone from feeling unfairly penalized, emphasizing the need for objective rules agreed upon with the FIGC and other leagues. The objective is to minimize discretion and past controversies by applying uniform criteria.

Additionally, the dates for the Italian Supercoppa were also confirmed: it will take place the week before Christmas in Saudi Arabia, with the exact location (Riyadh or Jeddah) yet to be decided. The final of the Coppa Italia, however, remains under discussion, potentially being moved to Milan to avoid clashes with other events.

Finally, commenting on the sports decree, Simonelli remarked that while 8-year contracts are a positive step, a commissioner is needed for stadiums. He added that although Euro 2032 might seem far off, time is pressing, with the UEFA deadline set for October 2026.
