A previous attempt under Spalletti saw the Roma attacking midfielder declare, “I feel Argentine.” While not currently in Coverciano`s plans, his agent`s recent statements reopen the possibility.
Matias Soulé has unequivocally rejected the possibility of playing for the Italian National Team, stating, “I feel Argentine.” This firm stance dates back to a conversation months ago with then-coach Luciano Spalletti. The Roma player`s ambition is to be called up by Lionel Scaloni for Argentina, despite expressing great respect and affection for Italy, the country where he currently resides.

The FIGC`s Position
Recent statements by Soulé`s agent, Martin Guastadisegno, have been acknowledged at Coverciano. However, neither head coach Rino Gattuso, who is currently focused on World Cup qualifiers, nor FIGC president Gabriele Gravina, considers Soulé a priority. The Federation is evaluating other talents, such as Nigerian defender Ahanor from Atalanta (awaiting citizenship) and striker Tresoldi from Club Brugge (an Italian by family who could potentially change sporting nationality). Soulé will not be considered by Italy unless he himself expresses a clear and definitive desire to change his mind in the near future, without waiting for moves from Argentina.
Background
It`s important to note that Soulé, despite holding an Italian passport which grants him EU citizen status, has already represented Argentina`s youth teams. He was also called up by Scaloni in September 2024 for a World Cup qualifier against Chile. As he did not make an official appearance in that match, FIFA regulations technically allow Soulé to still choose Italy. However, despite media pressure from his agent, such a scenario is considered highly improbable.
