Simone Perrotta, born in Ashton-under-Lyne, England, and later moving to Cerisano, Italy, spent a significant part of his football career at AS Roma. He became an indispensable player during Luciano Spalletti's initial tenure as coach.
Initially a central midfielder or defensive midfielder, Perrotta transitioned to an attacking midfield role under Spalletti. This tactical shift, utilizing his exceptional ability for timely runs into the box, transformed him into a constant offensive threat, almost like an additional forward.
During his nine seasons in Rome, Perrotta scored 48 goals in 327 appearances. His most prolific scoring season was 2006/2007, with 13 goals, including two in the Coppa Italia final against Inter. He repeated his scoring feat against Inter the following year in the Coppa Italia final, which marked Roma's last national trophy win.
Perrotta was a key member of the Italian squad that won the 2006 World Cup in Germany, playing every minute until the quarter-finals. He was substituted in the semi-final and final matches.
