Argentina's Scaloni Opens Door to Renewal, Discusses National Team's Next Generation
Lionel Scaloni, Argentina's national football team coach, has indicated a willingness to renew his contract, which expires at the end of the year. He confirmed that discussions have begun with Claudio Tapia, president of the Argentine Football Association (AFA).
"We hadn't spoken since the World Cup," Scaloni stated at a press conference ahead of upcoming friendly matches. "We met to see if we can move forward and reach an agreement. There's willingness from both sides, but we've just started talking."
Scaloni explained his approach after the World Cup final: "I needed to carefully consider the sporting aspect, which is paramount, without neglecting the financial side. We had to analyze our situation and what lies ahead, and I decided to seek an agreement. If I hadn't seen the possibility of competing or building something significant, I wouldn't even have considered sitting down to talk."
He also addressed the transition of the national team and the period after Lionel Messi. "After the World Cup, we analyzed the situation role by role: how many players will have reached a certain age, where we stand, and if we can continue to rely on the playing style we want with these players," Scaloni said. He concluded, "We believe it's possible to continue."
Scaloni added, "There are young players capable of contributing, and we will also explore different ways of playing without losing sight of the fact that our style revolves around possession and valuing quality players."
